Glimpses of the History of Indian Mathematics Guest lecture by Professor Dinesh Singh, Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi
Professor Dinesh Singh, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi visited the University of Colombo on 26 November 2011 and conducted a guest lecture on ‘Glimpses of the History of Indian Mathematics.’ His Excellency, Mr. Ashok K. Kantha, the High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the chief guest. Professor Kshanika Hirimburegama, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Mr. Birender Singh Yadav, Director ICCR, Deans of the Faculties, Heads of Departments, academics and students of the University of Colombo attended the event.
Prof. Singh’s lecture was thought-provoking and insightful, focusing on the origins of mathematical research in India and the possible influence of Indian mathematicians on Western scholarship. Prof. Singh emphasized that inspiration can be drawn from the repertoire of knowledge historically available in the south Asian region.
